Job Details

As a Senior Subrogation Adjuster, you will serve as a key individual contributor within Openly’s Claims organization, taking direct ownership of subrogation recovery efforts with a primary focus on homeowner property losses (fire, water, product failure, construction defect, and third-party liability). Working in close collaboration with Openly’s subrogation vendor partner, you will identify high-value recovery opportunities, review and approve expense and litigation strategies, coordinate and safeguard critical evidence, and actively manage placed files to drive optimal, timely resolutions. You will balance forensic investigation with sharp financial discipline, knowing exactly when to deploy engineers, forensic experts, or legal counsel. Beyond external file management, you will serve as an essential partner to the front-line claims team—coaching and training adjusters to spot recovery opportunities early, identify when evidence is required, properly place customers on notice, and safeguard critical proof from day one. In addition, you will leverage operational data and field insights to continuously elevate and refine Openly’s broader recovery program.

Key Responsibilities

Recovery Identification & Investigation

  • Review paid and open homeowner claims to identify subrogation potential early, evaluate liability, and build a documented recovery plan — approaching cause-and-origin with the curiosity to spot recoveries others miss across manufacturers, contractors, tenants, utilities, and other third parties.

  • Move with urgency to preserve and acquire evidence the moment a potential claim arises — putting parties on notice and coordinating joint inspections to prevent spoliation, because the party that controls the evidence usually controls the case.

Expert & Litigation Strategy

  • Deploy experts with discipline: know when a loss warrants a forensic investigator or engineer, and which discipline the facts call for, spending only where it meaningfully strengthens recovery.

  • Decide when litigation is justified and when it is not, weighing likely recovery against expert and legal cost, jurisdictional hurdles, and the realistic odds of collection.

Negotiation, Vendor & Partner Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Openly’s subrogation vendor and outside counsel on placed files — reviewing and approving expense and litigation requests, coordinating evidence, setting expectations up front, managing cost and scope, and monitoring progress so nothing stalls.

  • Support the front-line claims team with training, coaching, and feedback so adjusters identify and refer subrogation well, and collaborate across SIU, Legal, and Catastrophe to surface recurring recovery opportunities.

  • Negotiate directly with carriers, third parties, self-insureds, public adjusters, and attorneys — with integrity and confidence — and pursue inter-company arbitration where appropriate.

Claims Guidance & Technical Direction

  • Actively review files to identify recovery opportunities early, providing proactive direction to front-line adjusters on critical actions such as evidence preservation and scene investigation.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert and resource for the claims team, providing ongoing training and guidance to elevate the organization's collective ability to spot and preserve recovery potential.

Documentation, Reserving & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate recovery files and reserves throughout the life of each file, and report on results against recovery goals. Regularly true-up reserves against actual recovery results to maintain data integrity and reflect realistic recovery experience.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of property claims experience, including 5+ years dedicated exclusively to property subrogation (rather than front-line claim handling).

  • Deep command of cause-and-origin, theories of liability (fire, water, product failure, construction defects), and complex multi-state legal landscapes (waiver of subrogation, anti-subrogation, comparative fault, made-whole, spoliation, and statutes of limitations).

  • Proven ability to critically evaluate and challenge expert reports while exercising sharp judgment on expert and litigation spend.

  • Demonstrated track record of identifying high-value recovery opportunities, preserving evidence, and negotiating complex, disputed, high-stakes matters to successful resolution.

  • Hands-on experience directing outside counsel and third-party vendors, effectively managing cost, scope, and timelines.

  • Active adjuster license(s) or eligibility for licensing across all required states.

  • Highly self-directed and adaptable in a fast-paced, remote environment, utilizing modern claims tools while consistently modeling Openly’s core values (Integrity, Teamwork, Curiosity, Urgency, Empathy).

Preferred Qualifications

  • CSRP (Certified Subrogation Recovery Professional) or comparable designation.

  • Prior experience standing up or improving a dedicated subrogation / recovery function.

  • Experience with inter-company arbitration (e.g., Arbitration Forums).

  • Experience with auto claims subrogation.

  • Familiarity with claims management systems, estimating platforms (e.g., Cotality), and Microsoft Office Suite / Google products.

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or AIC, CPCU, or other relevant professional designation.
